Program description:

Supply and demand is a well-established economic maxim, and current market circumstances have created a challenging environment for healthcare systems. This program will explore how providers make capital decisions to maximize their return on investment while achieving patient and staff satisfaction, all within the framework of their highly regulated ecosystem. We will discuss the leading drivers for bottom line decisions including regulatory and healthcare policy, market conditions as well as centralized vs de-centralized operations, and geographic distribution of facilities. Our panelists will give us insights into the way these trends are shaping their 5-year capital plans and the paths that their organizations will take going forward.

Speaker Bios:

Daniel Cusick, a leading New York Healthcare Principal & Architect, practicing 30+ years, has contributed with multi-billion dollars of design and construction at healthcare facilities nationally.  Forefront leader for Stantec and HDR Healthcare, he focuses on people first and communities' direct needs.  He looks holistically at building health, even with his creation and accreditation for 'Master of Science - Architecture, Health & Design' program at NYIT, that nourishes students at the beginning of their career focused on innovation in healthcare.  He is honored with design + building the first LEED Platinum hospital in NYS.  Successful selected projects are Catholic Health Services - Patient Care Pavilion, Northwell Health - Zucker Hillside, Sky Health, Katz Women's Hospital, Surgi-Centers, MSKCC Super Block and Children's Pavilion, NYU, NYP, Mount Sinai amongst other clients.  He honors successes with overseeing and managing thousands of amazing clients, teams, and consultants nationwide.

Joyce Durham is the Director of Strategic Facility Planning at NewYork-Presbyterian, a 10-hospital system in New York City. Her career took quite a circuitous route to get to this point. After college, Ms. Durham’s first job was as a nurse at Duke University Hospital during the period when the new hospital was under construction. A couple years after starting work, she was asked to participate in a planning team that was tasked with transitioning their unit to the new hospital. It was during this experience that Ms. Durham became acutely aware of the impact the physical environment has on the delivery of care. This experience led her to pursue a degree in architecture and begin her long journey of integrating the clinical perspective into healthcare design.

Over the past 25 years, Ms. Durham has worked in healthcare consulting firms, architectural firms and even spent five years in international healthcare development. Her activities included conducting detailed operational analyses of complex clinical areas (e.g., ED, surgery, imaging services, obstetrics, etc.), developing detailed functional and space programs, and participating in the development of master plans for hospital campuses. Ms. Durham was fortunate to participate in the planning of the David H Koch Building on the NYP Weill Cornell campus as a consultant. Other memorable engagements include planning 300-bed hospitals in Vietnam and Ethiopia, as well as leading a two-year repurposing plan on the Stanford Hospital campus that was implemented following the addition of a major expansion.

Elizabeth Sullivan is currently the AVP of Architecture at Northwell, and an adjunct professor at NYSID. She has extensive experience in a variety of building types but focused her career in Healthcare Nationally and Internationally. Strong project management skills with a focus on the development of collaborative relationships to develop cohesive designs, drawings and construction documents that result in successful projects and solutions to real world challenges. Ms. Sullivan has extensive management and medical planning experience. As a healthcare planner, she specializes in medical master planning, small-and large-scale facilities, and complex multi-phased projects. Manages and coordinates with leadership, reconciling key stakeholder and user requirements with applicable codes and guidelines to achieve design solutions that not only meet programmatic needs but also translate into cohesive planning concepts. Additionally, she worked as both a Project Manager and later as a Director of Facilities and Real Estate Planning for Montefiore Health System. Ms. Sullivan has unique inside experience working as the client and understands the entire project process from the owner’s perspective as well as a consultant. She is also Co-Chair of the AIA-NY Design for Health Committee, is an Associate AIA member, and credentialed as LEED GA and EDAC.
