Brasfield & Gorrie
Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, our company is the successor to the Thos. C. Brasfield company, a general contractor operating as a sole proprietor from 1921. Miller Gorrie purchased the company's construction assets in 1964 and changed the name to Brasfield & Gorrie in 1967.
Initially, the new company continued in the niche of small commercial and remodeling projects. As profitability increased, the company shifted its emphasis to larger commercial, institutional, healthcare, water/wastewater, and industrial projects. In 1984, Brasfield & Gorrie began expanding, opening full-service offices in Atlanta, Georgia, and Orlando, Florida. Since that time, the company has continued to grow and now serves clients from 13 offices in eight states.
Brasfield & Gorrie's success is the result of a strong work ethic and industry knowledge combined with innovation and collaboration. In the first full year after Miller Gorrie purchased the assets of the Thos. C. Brasfield company, our annual revenue was less than $1 million. Today, our annual revenue is approximately $5 billion, and we are a nationally respected general contractor with 3,500 employees and an average project value of $34 million.
Healthcare
We received our first hospital construction contract in 1969, a $6.2 million negotiated contract for a major expansion to what was then East End Memorial Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Brasfield & Gorrie provided all preconstruction and construction services. The success of the project led to subsequent projects, and the relationship with the client continues to this day.
Our company has grown tremendously since 1969, and so has our healthcare construction business. Brasfield & Gorrie is now a nationally respected general contractor, and healthcare is our largest market sector, with $1.3 billion in healthcare revenue in 2020. Our professional staff can handle any size project, and we have more than 100 project managers and field superintendents specifically dedicated to healthcare work. Our healthcare portfolio includes hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, medical office buildings, and proton therapy centers.
Brasfield & Gorrie’s success in healthcare comes from hard work and from serving our clients’ needs. We understand the healthcare business and place the highest priority on our clients’ concerns. Most of our healthcare projects are for clients we have with worked with previously—usually on more than one project—and most are negotiated contracts for both preconstruction and construction services.
With a collaborative, team approach, we work to become an extension of the medical campus staff to foster a true partnering arrangement. Maintaining infection control, safety, and uninterrupted campus operations are our primary focuses. As a cohesive team with common goals, we can minimize disruption to campus operations and focus on providing the best end result for the people who will benefit the most from improved facilities: doctors, nurses, patients, and staff.
