Join AMFP Northeast Ohio for an insightful breakfast program featuring a panel of healthcare industry leaders discussing the current state of the healthcare sector. This conversation will explore trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping healthcare facilities, with a focus on how owners, end-users, AEC professionals, and real estate experts can adapt and thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Speakers:
Brian Smith (moderator) is a leading international expert in healthcare real estate development and construction. In 1993 at the age of 31, Brian became the Director of Construction for the Cleveland Clinic and spent the next 30 years managing construction and real estate development for the world-renowned institution, Brian has two undergraduate degrees in Construction Technology as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from Case Western Reserve University. Brian has a special interest in offering aid to Honduras and is active on several not-for-profit boards that provide humanitarian aid and lifesaving surgeries to developing nations around the world with most of his efforts focused on Honduras, Central America. Since 2001, Brian has led over 100 medical and construction trips to Honduras.

Sean Murphy, Director of Preconstruction Services at University Hospitals through Sodexo, oversees the planning, budgeting, and coordination of capital construction projects. With a background in Economics and construction project management, Sean brings expertise in design review, contractor selection, and risk management. His strategic approach prioritizes efficiency, cost control, and alignment with operational goals. Passionate about innovation in healthcare environments, he collaborates with stakeholders and design teams to create patient-centered spaces. His proven leadership and commitment to excellence make him an invaluable asset in delivering high-quality construction outcomes.

Leilani Barkan is a seasoned interior designer with over two decades of experience in the healthcare design industry. Her mission is to create healing environments that support the patients, their families, and caregivers who use the spaces daily. She has a BA in Interior Design from Kent State University and multiple publications in leading healthcare design magazines. As an integral part of the Healthcare Studio at the Cleveland Clinic, she defines and implements the clinic's design standards across its facilities. She coordinates with various stakeholders, manages and documents finish and furniture standards, leads product research and evaluation, and assist with recapitalization of common, inpatient, and outpatient spaces. Leilani is passionate about delivering design excellence that aligns with the clinic's vision and values.

Ron Young is a Senior Director of the Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is an experienced leaders in healthcare, managing imaging departments in his early career and now Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology practices across the Cleveland Clinic system. Ron has lead efforts in expansion of both cancer and imaging centers. Ron manages and is responsible for the capital projects for the Cancer Institute and works closely with the strategy team on affiliations and acquisitions for the Cleveland Clinic.

Al Matyas, Vice President of Ambulatory Operations and Business Development at Southwest General Health System, has brought an entrepreneurial mindset to his career from its start. His focus has been on developing new services that meet the changing needs of the customer. His strong focus on ambulatory and outpatient services enabled him to develop profitable outpatient facilities, ambulatory practices, and services that meet the ever-changing needs of the healthcare consumer. A scientist by training, he utilizes strong analytical skills to augment a keen business acumen. By focusing on the consumer, he has driven multiple organizations to shift development strategies toward profitable outpatient services.
